What Is Outdoor Storage?
Outdoor storage is secure yard storage for cargo that does not belong — or simply cannot fit — inside a warehouse bay. Oversized and out-of-gauge (OOG) pieces, heavy machinery, and project cargo often travel on open equipment and are built to be handled in the open; what they need on the ground is space, security, and a team that can move them when the next leg is ready. TRT provides outdoor storage at its port facilities: a 200,000-square-foot secure outdoor yard in Newark, and outdoor storage in Savannah alongside our brand-new warehouse there. Both sit inside the ports our drayage serves, so cargo comes off the terminal and into the yard without an inland haul in between.
What We Store Outdoors
If a piece is too big for a standard warehouse bay, the outdoor yard is where it waits — protected, accounted for, and ready to move:
- Oversized and out-of-gauge (OOG) cargo — pieces that exceed standard container or bay dimensions in any direction
- Heavy machinery — large industrial and plant equipment held between legs of a move
- Construction equipment — heavy site machinery staged between ports, plants, and job sites
- Project cargo — one-time project pieces waiting for their delivery window or their next preparation step
- Industrial components and tanks — massive pieces that ship as out-of-gauge freight
- Vehicles, boats and yachts — units that need secure ground space before or after transport
- Containers — container parking is available, so boxes can wait at the facility instead of on a terminal or a street
How Outdoor Storage Works
Step 1 — Send us the cargo details
Tell us what is coming, how big and heavy each piece is, and how long it may stay. From those details we confirm the facility, plan the yard space, and arrange any handling equipment the pieces need on arrival.
Step 2 — Arrival at the facility
Cargo reaches the yard the way it reaches everything at TRT: our drayage team collects containers at Port Newark-Elizabeth or the Port of Savannah, and trucks deliver direct to the facility. Oversized pieces arriving on open equipment are received by the same teams that will store them.
Step 3 — Positioning and securing
Each piece is positioned in the yard and secured by our professional team, and accounted for in the facility’s inventory systems while it is with us — so a stored piece is a tracked piece, not a forgotten one.
Step 4 — Preparation while it waits
If the next leg calls for it, the piece is shrink-wrapped, crated, or otherwise prepared in place by our wrapping and craning teams, so no time is lost when the delivery window opens.
Step 5 — Release and onward movement
When the cargo is called forward, it is loaded and moved out under TRT coordination — onto oversize or standard transport, into the warehouse, or back toward the terminal — by the same company that received it.
Security in the Outdoor Yard
Outdoor does not mean unprotected. The Newark facility runs 24/7 security monitoring, and all TRT warehouses have state-of-the-art surveillance and 24-hour security guards — the yards are watched around the clock, inside the port. Every shipment is professionally handled and carefully monitored under strict protocols while it is with us, whether it sits in a rack indoors or on the ground outside. Cargo in the yard is positioned and secured by the same teams that will prepare and load it for its next move, so it is never simply dropped and forgotten: it is staged, tracked, and ready.
Outdoor Storage in Newark and Savannah
TRT operates many warehouses; its main ones are in Newark and Savannah, and both offer outdoor storage. In Newark, the 200,000-square-foot secure outdoor yard sits alongside 150,000 square feet of warehouse space — a 120,000-square-foot warehouse anchored on 20 acres of yard space in the Port of Newark, plus a 30,000-square-foot warehouse with loading docks built for specialized cargo handling — all inside the Port Newark–Elizabeth Marine Terminal. In Savannah, outdoor storage for out-of-gauge cargo that cannot fit inside a standard warehouse bay is available at our brand-new 316,800-square-foot warehouse on a 30-acre site in the Port of Savannah. At both locations, the yard is part of a working facility — drayage, warehousing, transloading, and cargo preparation happen on the same site.
Storage That Connects to the Rest of Your Move
Outdoor storage works best as a staging step, not a dead end — and at TRT it is one stop inside a chain the same company runs end to end. A piece can arrive by our Drayage Services from the terminal, be held in the yard for days or for a long-term program, be prepared while it waits by our Wrapping & Craning team — shrink-wrapped against the weather, crated where it needs structure — and then move out on Oversize Transportation when its window opens. Cargo that needs indoor space instead can step into our Warehouse Services space at the same facility. Short-term or long-term, the cargo never changes companies while it waits.
What Affects the Cost of Outdoor Storage
Outdoor storage pricing is built from the specifics of your cargo, not a flat rate. The main factors are the size and footprint of the pieces, how many units are stored, how long they stay — short-term staging and long-term storage are priced differently — and any handling the cargo needs while it is with us: positioning, wrapping, crating, or loading for its next leg. As with every TRT service, you receive a clear, detailed quote before any shipment is accepted, with no hidden fees.
What to Send Us for an Outdoor Storage Quote
- What the cargo is, with dimensions (length × width × height) and total weight per piece
- How many pieces or containers need space, and how they arrive — container, flat rack, or open trailer
- Which facility you want — Newark (Port Newark-Elizabeth) or Savannah (Port of Savannah)
- How long you expect the cargo to stay, if you know
- What happens next — onward transport, wrapping or crating, transloading, or delivery
- Anything fragile, high-value, or sensitive about the pieces that we should plan around
Send the details through our contact page, call us at +1 973 344 7100 ext 221, or email drayage@usatrt.com, and we will confirm space and come back with a clear, detailed quote.
Outdoor Storage FAQs
What is outdoor storage?
Outdoor storage is secure yard storage for cargo that cannot fit — or does not belong — inside a warehouse bay: oversized and out-of-gauge pieces, heavy machinery, project cargo, and containers. At TRT it is provided at our port facilities in Newark and Savannah, with 24/7 security, as part of a working warehouse operation.
What types of cargo can be stored outdoors?
We store oversized and out-of-gauge (OOG) cargo, heavy machinery, construction equipment, project cargo, industrial components and tanks, vehicles, boats and yachts, and containers. Most types of cargo we handle can be kept outdoors when indoor bays do not fit it; oversized pieces that cannot go indoors are kept in our secure outdoor yards.
How much outdoor storage space does TRT have?
Our Newark facility includes a 200,000-square-foot secure outdoor yard, alongside 150,000 square feet of warehouse space inside the Port Newark–Elizabeth Marine Terminal. Outdoor storage for out-of-gauge cargo is also available in Savannah, at our brand-new 316,800-square-foot warehouse on a 30-acre site in the Port of Savannah.
How secure is cargo in outdoor storage?
Very. The Newark facility runs 24/7 security monitoring, and all TRT warehouses have state-of-the-art surveillance and 24-hour security guards. Cargo is professionally handled and carefully monitored while it is with us, and the yards sit inside the ports as part of our working facilities — not in open, unattended lots.
Can containers be parked or stored at TRT?
Yes. Container parking is offered at TRT facilities, so containers can wait at the warehouse instead of accumulating time on a terminal. Containers can also be unloaded and their cargo stored — indoors or in the yard — while the empty box is freed up and returned.
How long can cargo stay in outdoor storage?
Both short-term and long-term storage are available. Some pieces stay a few days between a vessel arrival and a delivery window; others are staged for longer project timelines. Tell us your expected timing when you ask for a quote and the storage will be planned around it.
Can cargo stored outdoors be prepared for its next move?
Yes. While cargo waits in the yard, our wrapping and craning teams can shrink-wrap it against the weather, build custom crating where it needs structure, and position it for loading. When the window opens, it moves out on TRT oversize or standard transport — prepared by the same company that stored it.
How do I get an outdoor storage quote?
Call us at +1 973 344 7100 ext 221, email drayage@usatrt.com, or reach us through our contact page. Tell us what the cargo is, its dimensions and weight, which facility you want, and how long it needs to stay, and we will provide a clear, detailed quote before any shipment is accepted.
