Drayage is the short-haul trucking leg that moves a shipping container between a port terminal and its next stop — a warehouse, a distribution center, or an onward transport connection. It is the link between ocean transport and the rest of the supply chain: a container can cross an ocean on a vessel, but it still has to get off the terminal, and drayage is what moves it. At TRT Logistics, drayage is a core service, not an afterthought. Our drayage operation serves Port Newark-Elizabeth and the Port of Savannah, and it is built around our own trucks, our own chassis, and our own warehouses inside the ports — so the container, the equipment, and the destination are all under one team’s control from the moment the box is picked up.

TRT provides local drayage services at the ports of Newark and Savannah, two of the busiest and most important shipping hubs in the U.S. Our headquarters sits within the Port Zone in Newark, and our main warehouses are inside the ports themselves — 150,000 square feet of warehouse space in Newark in Port Newark-Elizabeth, and our brand-new 316,800-square-foot warehouse in Savannah. That positioning matters for drayage: containers picked up at the terminal can move a short distance into TRT storage, transloading, or bonded holding, or they can be delivered directly to your warehouse or distribution center. Either way, TRT manages every step of the process, from container pickup at the port to final delivery, with facilities that have direct access to the terminals we serve.
How Container Drayage Works at TRT
Step 1 — Send us the container details
Tell us what is moving: how many containers, what cargo they hold, which port and terminal they arrive at, where the freight needs to go, and your timing. From those details we plan the pickup, the equipment, and the delivery schedule.
Step 2 — Pickup at the terminal
Our company drivers collect your containers at Port Newark-Elizabeth or the Port of Savannah using TRT-owned chassis. Because we own and operate our trucks, chassis, and trailers, scheduling does not depend on third-party carriers or rented equipment.
Step 3 — Move to the warehouse or the delivery point
The container goes where your supply chain needs it: into a TRT warehouse for storage, transloading, or bonded holding, or straight to your warehouse or distribution center. You get real-time tracking and status updates while it moves.
Step 4 — Unload, transload, or hold
At a TRT facility, container freight can be unloaded, sorted, and transloaded for onward delivery, held in short- or long-term storage, or — for in-bond cargo — received into our bonded Container Freight Station (CFS) in Newark under customs supervision.
Step 5 — Onward delivery
From the warehouse, freight moves out on the right equipment for its next leg — local delivery, oversize transportation for pieces that outgrow a standard trailer, or a loaded export container hauled back to the terminal for its vessel.
Drayage Plus Warehousing, Bonded Storage and Transloading
Drayage rarely stands alone — most containers are going somewhere specific to be unloaded, held, or transformed for their next leg. Because TRT runs the drayage, the warehousing, and the bonded facility, those steps happen inside one company. A container picked up at Port Newark-Elizabeth can move directly into our Warehouse Services space for transloading: the freight is unloaded, sorted, and reloaded for onward delivery while the container itself is freed up. In-bond imports can be received into our Bonded Warehouse — a bonded CFS inside the Port Newark–Elizabeth Marine Terminal — where cargo stays under customs supervision and duties and taxes do not need to be paid until the shipment is released. Oversized pieces that cannot go indoors can be held in our secure outdoor yards and prepared for their next move by our wrapping and craning teams. One pickup, one team, no hand-offs between vendors.
